About us

TasPrideTeam

A small group of concerned people met in December 1992 in Hobart to discuss the possibility of establishing a Gay and Lesbian Community Centre, essentially to be a focus for support, resources and communication in the wider gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

The Gay and Lesbian Community Centre was incorporated as The GLC Centre Inc. and is now operated to:

  • provide support, counseling and charitable services for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.
  • provide services which encourage gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and Transgender people to develop a positive self- image as they contribute in both the gay and wider communities.
  • promote, encourage and maintain productive, harmonious and sensible interaction between the wider community and ourselves.
  • act as a focus point for activities of a non-secular, non political nature.
  • obtain property to service the needs of the GLBTIQ community.
  • establish and maintain liaison with organisations which have similar objectives and disseminate information relevant to this community.
  • organise, promote, sponsor, finance, and administer schemes to provide assistance to our community.

The need for a Gay and Lesbian Community Centre is no longer considered necessary due to dramatic changes in social attitudes, gay rights and gay law reform. Therefore our organisation is looking forward to adopting a new name in 2009 that better represents our community and our purpose.

We are aiming to become TasPride and we will continue to be an organisation dedicated to celebrating, uniting and promoting the Tasmanian Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer community.

It is important to understand that whilst we naturally respect the achievements and aims of The Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights group, the GLC Centre is an independent organisation.

GLC Centre produces the TasPride Festival each November, hosts cultural events throughout the year, provides the Gay Information Line, and publishes a regular newsletter. It also promotes a wide range of activities produced all year around by the many GLBTIQ organisations in Tasmania.

Membership is open to all members of the GLBTIQ community and their friends, both in Tasmania and across Australia.

Members of the GLC Centre receive regular information about Queer life in Tasmania through the GLC Centre newsletter and email updates, and can take advantage of members-only rates to special events. GLC Centre also has very active Facebook and MySpace pages for promotion of events in Tasmania.
